Counseling

The trauma that sexual violence has caused the women of Congo extends much farther than just the physical. The emotional and psychological trauma stays even after the surgeries are completed and the scars are healed.

Wamu provides women with counseling services that are relevant to their situations and culture.

We use a Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy curriculum to train our local social workers and practitioners and this emphasis on holistic trauma-recovery is the core of all of our counseling activities. Wamu also uses art therapy to treat our women. Dance, song and theatre are all integral parts of Congolese culture and it is so AWESOME to see the WamuWomen singing and rejoicing in the name of their own recovery and empowerment.

Our partnership with the awesome Build-a-Bridge group has meant that we can expand the scope of the art-therapy we offer, into digital storytelling, and visual art.
